Operations: quick answers
Do bakeries have to put expiry dates on products?
It depends on where you sell and whether the food is prepackaged. In the US, federal date labelling is largely voluntary except for infant formula, though some states have rules. In the UAE and Pakistan, packaged food is expected to show production and expiry dates. Read the guide.
What is the difference between best-by and use-by?
Best-by (or best before) is about quality: the product is at its best until then. Use-by is about safety and is used for highly perishable foods. Most baked goods carry best-by dates. Read the guide.
What is a weight-embedded barcode?
A barcode printed by a label scale in which some digits identify the product and others carry the weight. The POS reads both from one scan and calculates the price at your rate. Read the guide.
What does the prefix on a scale barcode mean?
It tells the POS the barcode came from a scale rather than a product package. Prefixes starting with 2 are reserved for in-store use, which is why scale labels often start with 20–29. Read the guide.
