Cakes & pricing: quick answers
How much deposit should a bakery take?
25–50% for standard pre-orders, 50–100% for custom cakes or anything with special ingredients. The deposit should at least cover what you spend before pickup. Read the guide.
Can a bakery keep a deposit if the customer cancels?
Usually yes, if your written policy said so before the customer paid and the amount is reasonable for the costs you incurred. Consumer rules vary by state and country, so check yours. Read the guide.
How do you calculate the price of a custom cake?
Add the ingredient and packaging cost, the labour (hours × your hourly cost), and a share of overhead, then divide by one minus your target margin. For example, a cake that costs 40 to make with a 60% target margin sells for 40 ÷ 0.4 = 100. Read the guide.
Should I price cakes per serving?
Yes, for the base cake. Set a price per serving for each flavour family, then multiply by the servings in each size. Add design work on top as separate add-ons. Read the guide.
